Rhosddu residents plant community orchard for future generations

Rhosddu councillor Marc Jones has thanked all who came to plant a new community orchard, especially the children who will see the fruits of their labour for years to come.

The orchard has apples, pears, damsons, plums and cherry trees that are all Welsh heritage stock. They include rare varieties such as the Bardsey apple and Denbigh plum, which have been cultivated by Ian Sturrock of Bangor.

The planting took place on a derelict part of Ashfield Park behind Wrexham's tennis centre and the trees were funded by Rhosddu Community Council.

Cllr Jones, Plaid Cymru member for Grosvenor ward, said:
"It was great to see so many young people come to help plant the trees. The idea was to plant trees that are manageable and will produce a crop that anyone can enjoy. I hope the children who were involved in the planting will enjoy the fruits of their labour long after us oldies have left the scene.

"I'm also grateful to Horticulture Wales and Incredible Edible Wrecsam who assisted in the work and provided stakes to secure the trees. It was a real team effort and I'll look forward to seeing how the community orchard develops."
