44 years ago today, a slag heap above Aberfan slid down the mountain and engulfed the village school. The man-made disaster took the lives of 28 adults and 116 children.
As primary schoolkids we were taken to the village cemetery en route to an Urdd Eisteddfod. Row upon row of identical white headstones commemorated each child. It's impossible not to be moved by such a terrible loss for the entire community.
